Default Main Archive Page template?
Vivvo 4.x

I'm trying to find the template that controls the main archive page: the page you land on when you click the bottom text link; mysite/archive

I've modified the template under archive.. default.tpl and this works great for archive search results but the main archive entry page remains unchanged. I've searched every .tpl file to no avail...

I think that archive search uses frame/default.tpl template.

You can try editing that template and see if it gives any results.
