Yes, I can imaging cacheing can make a big difference, especially if you have a lot of traffic. Since Vivvo does not actually create static pages, this means that every page call must access the database to retrieve a page. By cacheing, you can avoid the constant database calls and make your site more like a "static" site in performance. This is especially important if you're in a shared server environment!

I run my own dedicated server, but am experiencing a massive performance hit since upgrading to Vivvo 4. I'm about to switch on cacheing - what are the downsides of it?

Well, it's normal for any LAMP application to use almost 100% of any memory available all the time. This doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem, it's just that these applications will "stake out" their claim on the memory in anticipation of using it. For example, if you've got 1 gig of memory today (900mb used) and install another 1gig, you'll find that suddenly 1.8gb is used when nothing has changed. This is normal.
Vivvo is, by nature, a processor/memory intensive application since it has to make a database call for almost every action it takes; cacheing should actually reduce this in the long run.
A VPS/shared option is never a good solution for a complex web application since you're sharing all the resources. If you're going to run a large Vivvo site, you'll need to expect it to take more resources and a dedicated solution will offer much better performance.
On that note; we're considering offering Vivvo hosting when CustomVivvo! opens. Is this something that anyone would be interested in? What we would offer would be limited to a certain number of users, and a valid Vivvo license would be required. We use a dedicated server environment with 4gb RAM, Dual 250gb drives (RAID), nightly backups, and 100% network uptime. Data center is in Dallas, Texas. I'd love some input on who might be interested in this to see if we should offer it as an option, and the price which might be fair.

Yes, it's supposed to releive the CPU. What's unique and great about Vivvo is that it does not simply cache EVERYTHING, but rather allows you to pick and choose which areas are cached. This way you won't run into issues with having banners cached, etc.
