Upgrade strategy for busy site

I have a very busy site (several thousand article views each day) and I want to upgrade from 4 to 4.1. I have added plug-ins and made several modifications to templates, etc.

Becuase of this I am not too keen on upgrading in "real time" so simply applying the upgrade script is not an option.

Am I able to (technically and abiding by license rules) install a fresh copy of 4.15; apply my modifications manually; import data from the old database and then switch over to my new installation to make it live?

If this is not possible - does anyone else have any suggestions?

Not a problem at all, you can perform the upgrade on any subdomain (like new.example.com), just let our support know so we can add this to your license.

But is there a migration script for the data from 4 to 4.1? Or is the database the same?
