How "related articles" works ?

I have learned that clicking "index related articles" in admin creates "related articles", but I don't understand how it works. Are "related articles" really related to similar subject/keywords ? Please explain.

I have another question: how to archive articles? Link "manage archived articles" in admin is dead, I have no archived articles. How to archive them?
