Hi:

I found this - http://docs.mioplanet.com/create_desktop_alert.php

Thought you might all like that :)

So I downloaded, and I am working on a Desktop Alert application which draws headlines from Vivvo RSS feeds and displays pop-up alerts on users' PCs.

I am having a few problems though, the application expects a url ending with .xml extension.

I can only find RSS feed in vivvo ending in .php

The application works if I use the url like below but news items are not clickable:-
http%3A//www.vox.gi/rss/rss.php%3FwcCategory%3D0%26wcHeadlines%3D5

I have no problems if I change url to another RSS feed eg:- http%3A//www.eonline.com/syndication/feeds/rssfeeds/topstories.xml

Is this an issue with the .xml extension or perhaps version of the RSS feed?

Can anyone help with this?

Issuing our readers with a customized Desktop Alert system would be cool and should keep them coming to our sites.

Perhaps Vivvo might also consider adding something similar to this as a module in future versions. ;)

Gus,

Any luck with this? I haven't had much time to look into this, but I'm just curious whether you manage to make it work somehow? :)

Hi again:

I have been able to work round the non-clickable link by adding a link on the actual template of the pop-up to the site, but it will display main screen and not the actual article in the alert - reader has to look for article - at least you get the reader to the site.

However it is supposed to pull the lastest article via RSS, check against those already in memory and if a new one will display alert. But this not always the case, it seems to fail sometimes.

I have not had much time to look deeper into this, but would be nice to have working.

I realeased unoficial beta version to see if anyone could provide some more help but no luck yet: - http://www.vox.gi/alerts/

I'll have to get in contact with product's support and deal with it their end.
Problem is to get support you need to purchase product and I'm not really sure it will work correctly, this is why I wanted to try out 1st.

The software is free as long as it's not for profit, its very easy to use and wraps your product into a cool windows installer for your readers to download and install.

I thought that this product would be interesting for this comunity and woudl attract more ppl to test it out, so I posted details here, but looks as if its not that hot after all.:(

I looked at this too after you posted it... but haven't had enough time to spend with it to really offer any help. I planned on playing with it this weekend, but didn't get to it, so it'll have to be sometime this week.

This can be a very cool feature, and if we can integrate a way to add in ads, this can be a large revenue stream.

Yes I agree with zwenthe this is a cool feature.

Adverts are possible, software actually incorporates special tags to be used for pulling adverts.

Software can also be set to have its config file located at your website, so you can change everyones' config, simply by changing one copy on your site.

Software can collect alerts/adverts from a mio-script xml (not standard RSS) file. Perhaps we could incorporate use of this file with vivvo.

It will also create customized News Ticker, RSS reader and other applications, so once we can get the RSS/xml stuff sorted, you can easily release other applications to your readers.

One thing though, I suppose if software will serve adverts, then it would come under commercial use, and would require purchase of the software, albeit its not that expensive, compared to the revenue it could bring in.

Anyway I would purchase software if I was sure it will work correctly.

Hope we can get this off the ground eventually :-)
