I'm kind of confused by this feature though it should probably be obvious...

I'm not quite sure I understand what setting an article to archive does except that it makes it accessible through the calendar, right? Is that the only point to doing that extra step?

Can articles set to archive be found via search? When I changed one article to archived, it didn't come up when I did a search.

Archived articles are excluded from all standard SQL queries, for maximum performance. That's the main point. They can be accessed only by searching the archive (http://www.myvivvo.com/archive).

Does Vivvo make a recommendation on when things should be moved to archive? for example, after 6 months or 500 articles or something?

This fairly depends on your server/hosting, but in general you shouldn't be having more than 200,000 active articles.
