The sample article had a box in the article that was gray with a red outline. I don't see any box button in the article HTML editor, so how to create one?

Not sure on what are you referring to?

Could you be more specific about this please?

Its very easy to do:

In the article text editor, choose "left highlight" or "right" in the "styles" drop down list.

:) I wasn't sure if he's referring to that.

But first you'll need to select paragraph you want to highlight :)
