View Full Version : Links To Old Pages

Please bear with me - this does make sense....honest.

I'm transferring an existing site to Word Press.

To do this, I've installed the package but deleted the htaccess file for now and renamed index.php - this allows me to add articles, without the existing site being affected.

The work in progress is here:

http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/newindex.php

Not much yet, but I want the mechanics to work before we slog on with the content.

Anyway, you'll see down the left that I've added loads of links to old areas of the site:

Old Articles
Old Reviews
Free Competitions
Free Fishing Forums
Free Competitions
SACN
Fishing Brochures
Contact Us
Ask The Forum
Links

These all work fine at the moment, in this test state.

However, if I upload the htaccess file and rename the index file back to index.php, only the top two links (to cgi-bin addresses) work. The others are kind of commandeered by Word Press and I get a 'page does not exist' error, with the Word Press template around them. This even happens when target is set to top and blank.

I'm sure it's something simple, but can any of you guys tell me what I need to do to let those links work?

Cheers in advance,

Elton

Just a wild guess... index.php does not exist now, right?

When I click on any link, I get "page not found" because URL rewrite engine seeks file index.php

If you want to test this, edit .htaccess file (make backup first) and replace all index.php with newindex.php

Tell me if this works...

Hi Alex,

Before, I was uploading is as it was and renaming newindex.php back to index.php to test things, with the effect I mentioned - the script was kind of grabbing ownership of my whole domain, so the links to old pages would come back with the error? message.

I've edited the htaccess file, by adding new in front of every index.php and left the index page as newindex.php.

I'm not sure what is going on now. If I click on, say, Free Competitions, it just hangs. In fact, I've just tested the root directory by tring to go to my old index and the whole site hangs.

This is really frsutrating - all I want to do is have links down the side to old pages on the site. Is there any easy way to do this?

Best wishes,

Elton

Strange, indeed...

The reason it hangs is probably due to infinite loop it is getting into (no idea why), but what's bugging me the most is error messages for existing links.

Maybe this not a solution to a problem, but just a thought - why don't you backup old articles (Administration -> Backup), do a clean install of 3.1 and import articles into it?

Meanwhile, I'll try to test this and see if I come up with something...

Alex,

That's what I did. :(

Is there a good time when you're online when I can show you the effect?

If you email me, I have MSN and can add you and show you. Obviously, I want to co-ordinate it, as it kills the rest of my site LOL

Best wishes,

Elton
